 Meditation (Dhyana) is a technique which gives the mind and body an opportunity to rest and restore . It offers time and space in a persons day to release stress and recuperate from tiredness naturally, increasing vitality and a zest for life.

 

 

 What is the purpose of meditation?

 Traditionally meditation was and still is used for spiritual growth. It has been found to increase personal awareness, remain focused in the present, release the ego and develop inner peace. In these modern times it has become an invaluable technique to free oneself of stress or find a place 'to go' or retreat to, in an ever increasing busy world. Feeling more relaxed and at peace enhances wellbeing through its cumulative affect. Response to stress changes insofar as tolerance rises and reactions become controlled and constructive. Life is seen as a journey to enjoy and not 'attack' each day.

There are many definitions of meditation. Harold Bloomfield M.D. has a short, simple definition that is useful to start with.

 "Meditation quietens our usually busy consciousness. Through physically and mentally stilling the mind, we achieve heightened mental clarity".

For you to truly appreciate and understand meditation, it is important to experience it for yourself. 

Swami Sivananda said, 'Meditation is the royal path to freedom, a mysterious ladder which reaches from earth to heaven, from darkness to light and from mortality to immortality.'
